Frequently asked questions

Everything travelers want to know before visiting Ahangama.

Ahangama is Sri Lanka's most stylish surf town — a laid-back coastal village between Weligama and Galle that has become a magnet for surfers, digital nomads, wellness travellers, and creatives. It's known for its reef breaks, boutique hotels, specialty coffee cafes, yoga studios, and golden-hour sunsets. Think Bali vibes but quieter, more authentic, and far less crowded.

Yes — Ahangama is one of Sri Lanka's best surf destinations for intermediate and advanced surfers. Kabalana is the main break — a right-hand reef that gets hollow at low tide. Nearby Midigama offers a powerful left reef for experienced surfers. The best surf season runs from November to April. Beginners are better starting at Weligama Bay (10 minutes west) before progressing to Ahangama's reef breaks.

Absolutely — Ahangama has become one of Asia's most popular digital nomad destinations. There are multiple cafes with reliable WiFi, co-working spaces, and a thriving community of remote workers and entrepreneurs. Cost of living is low, the weather is excellent from November to April, and the lifestyle — surf in the morning, work from a beachfront cafe, sunset cocktails — is hard to beat anywhere in the world.

Ahangama is about 2.5–3 hours from Colombo via the Southern Expressway. A private taxi or transfer is the most comfortable option and costs around USD $45–65. The coastal train from Colombo Fort is one of the most scenic rail journeys in Asia — get off at Ahangama station, which is right in the village. Trains take around 3.5–4 hours. Tuk-tuks are available from the station to any hotel.

The best time to visit is November to April during the south coast dry season. Surf is consistent, skies are clear, and the nomad community is at its most lively. December to February is peak season — book accommodation early. For a quieter visit with still-great weather and surf, November and March are ideal. The southwest monsoon runs May to September bringing rain and choppy seas.
